Massa: Ferrari is getting even quicker
Felipe Massa has warned Ferrari's rivals that the Italian squad has got even quicker at the final test thanks to its latest upgrade package.
Ferrari has been in awe-inspiring form for much of winter testing, and although Massa did not feature at the top of the times today as he focused on long runs, he said the F10 was feeling better and better with its new updates.
"I had a very positive impression," Massa reported.
"You can feel more grip and more downforce.
"It’s encouraging, because it means that we made another step ahead compared to Jerez."
Although rain affected today's test and prevented much performance work, Massa was pleased to complete another race distance - during which he set some eye-opening heavy fuel times.
"We managed to drive many miles, which is always positive,” he said.
"We finished another race simulation without any problems, which helped us to better understand the tyre behaviour with different fuel loads and under different track conditions.
"I’m satisfied with today - we’re working in the right direction for the start of the championship."
He will stay in the car for tomorrow's final day of winter testing, and is crossing his fingers for a totally dry day.
“Let’s hope the weather improves," said Massa.
"It would be important to finish the tests on a dry track to collect some more important data regarding the car under various conditions, also with less fuel on board."

Mercedes SLS AMG to lead the pack as new F1 safety car in 2010
2010 see's the introduction of a brand new safety car. Mercedes are to use their flagship SLS AMG sports car to lead the field when the track is neutralised during races this year.
The company, which has supplied F1’s safety cars since 1996, has also used Michael Schumacher to promote the car in a video advert which was shown before the team revealed the livery for their 2010 contender.
See below for pictures of the Mercedes SLS AMG safety car.
The SLS AMG has a 6.3-litre V8 engine with 571bhp. It’s 0-100kph (62mph) time may not rival an F1 car’s but at 3.8 seconds it’s not to be sniffed at.
The SLS AMG replaces the SL 63 AMG, introduced two years ago. The existing Medical Car, a C63 AMG estate, will remain in use.

Williams Novice Nico Hulkenberg upstages Ferrari's Fernando Alonso
Williams rookie Nico Hulkenberg stole the spotlight from Ferrari's Fernando Alonso on the second day of the final pre-season test in Barcelona. Double world champion Alonso looked set to top the times with an impressive lap set in the morning but the German beat him by 0.023 seconds later on. Hulkenberg's time of one minute 20.614 secs remained unbeaten as the fastest time so far at the four-day test. Michael Schumacher was seventh fastest, just ahead of Lewis Hamilton. The Englishman was cautiously optimistic about McLaren's prospects for the season, saying that he did not expect a repeat of last year, when they turned up at the first race with one of the slowest cars in the field. The seven-time champion, returning after a three-year retirement, said preparations had not gone perfectly. Asked if he could win the opening race in Bahrain on 14 March, the 41-year-old German said: "Maybe not. "I can't make judgements on other teams but we are not perfectly in the position we would like to be, which is competitive to win straight away." Fastest times from second day of Barcelona test: 1. Barca test update: Fernando Alonso beats previous best
Fernando Alonso took control of the
timesheets on Friday morning, setting the fastest lap time for this
week's Barcelona test, three-tenths up on the previous best.
Another sunny but windy day in Barcelona awaited the drivers -
and the fans - on the second day of testing at the Catalan circuit.
Proceedings kicked off with the standard installation laps before
Michael Schumacher set the day's first lap time, a 1:26.461 for the
Mercedes GP driver.
The German continued lapping, taking almost a full second off
his time but it wasn't enough to hold onto the P1 slot as Pedro de la
Rosa clocked a 1:23.609 before lowering the benchmark to a 1:22.629 on
the last lap of his four-lap run.
Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, who was sidelined on Thursday with an
electrical problem, joined the action, taking second place on his first
lap before improving to overhaul de la Rosa. A 1:22.613 for the double
World Champion, then a 1:22.200, a 1:22.163 and a brief off-track
excursion.
The Spaniard, though, managed to avoid damaging his Ferrari F10
and returned to the pits for a brief check up before heading back out,
joining Tonio Liuzzi and Jaime Alguersuari out on track.
Alonso was quickly back on the pace, posting a 1:21.418 on his
second lap, a 1:21.352, a 1:21.291 and then a 1:21.183 to almost 1.5s
ahead of second placed de la Rosa - and quicker than Thursday's best of
1:21.487, which was set by Red Bull's Mark Webber.
Liuzzi slotted his Force India into third place, revealing that
the "track is much better today, balance is quite good with a bit of
understeer... but it feels okay."
Alguersuari was fourth ahead of Schumacher while Jarno Trulli
and Nico Hulkenberg were the only other drivers to set times in the
first hour of play.
Meanwhile, Renault revealed that they were still working on
Robert Kubica's car. "Robert's still waiting to go back out. Those
adjustments are taking a bit longer than expected," the team said.

Barcelona Test Session 1 Results
Red Bull’s Mark Webber topped the timesheets as the final pre-season test began at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya on Thursday. Webber’s best time, a 1m 21.487s, was over nine-tenths of a second faster than the quickest lap from second-placed runner Nico Hulkenberg in the Williams.
With the weather largely settled and dry, the 11 teams in action at the Spanish circuit enjoyed a productive first day, with fastest runner Webber managing to complete 109 laps in the RB6.
“We had a pretty good day of testing,” said the Australian. “We did some simulations and performance items in the morning and a race simulation in the afternoon. We had a precautionary stop in the middle of the race simulation because of a gearbox oil alarm, but the guys got the car turned around pretty quickly and we finished the session, so it wasn’t too bad.”
Mercedes GP’s Nico Rosberg ended the day in third, ahead of Pedro de la Rosa for BMW Sauber. Rosberg focused on set-up work in the MGP W01, but also carried out race weekend procedures, which included qualifying runs and pit-stop simulations.
"We had a productive day today and we were able to learn a great deal from doing so many laps,” he said. “We're making good use of the testing time that we have and I'm feeling quite confident and comfortable in the car. Aerodynamically the car will change quite significantly for the first race in Bahrain so we're not focusing on the details but on general set-up work and seeing how the car behaves over long runs.”
De la Rosa, meanwhile, completed a Bahrain-focused aero test. Although pleased with progress, technical director Willy Rampf believes the team still have work to do to. “Today we have been concentrating on different mechanical set-ups and different downforce levels in preparation for the Bahrain Grand Prix,” explained Rampf. “We are not satisfied with the car's balance yet, but we have recorded a great deal of useful data which will help us further improve it."
McLaren were fifth with reigning world champion Jenson Button at the helm of the MP4-25. Concentrating primarily on mechanical and aerodynamic set-up work, Button completed 101 laps. Team mate Lewis Hamilton will take over the McLaren cockpit on Friday.
Force India’s Vitantonio Liuzzi ended the day in sixth ahead of Fernando Alonso for Ferrari. Liuzzi covered 65 laps in the VJM03 as he carried out set-up work. Alonso completed just 74 laps, after his F10 suffered an electrical problem during the morning. The Spaniard will continue to test on Friday.
Eighth slot went to Renault’s Vitaly Petrov, who finished almost seven-tenths of a second ahead of Toro Rosso’s Jaime Alguersuari. Petrov carried out set-up work and practiced pit stops. Alguersuari, meanwhile, covered 111 laps in the STR5 as he evaluated a new brake system.
“It was encouraging to have another trouble free day, completing a high mileage,” the young Spaniard said. “We learned a lot doing long runs on the soft compound tyre and I’m looking forward to tackling a different programme tomorrow.”
Lucas di Grassi, tenth, had completed 31 laps for Virgin when a spin at Turn Nine brought an early end to his running.
“We are continuing to debug the car hydraulics and making good progress in our understanding of the issue,” explained Virgin’s technical director Nick Wirth. “Unfortunately when we were running some experimental control settings on the car, which were adversely affecting its handling, this caught Lucas out on the entry to Turn Nine resulting in a spin and contact with the barrier.
"We’re going to need to spend the time before tomorrow replacing some broken suspension and wings. We should be back on track tomorrow morning when we hope to really start building up our mileage.”
Fairuz Fauzy was the day’s final runner. The Lotus reserve driver completed 76 laps in the T127.
“It was a very productive day, with no mechanical worries on the car,” explained chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne. “In the morning we conducted some engine LAMDA running which we completed successfully. We ran through a series of system set up checks, completed our first starts and evaluated a number of other control systems on the car, as well as monitoring temperatures and pressures throughout the car.
"All in all this was a successful day both on the track and we ticked off a lot of behind the scenes tasks ahead of the first race. Fairuz did a very good job today, with no mistakes, and we were able to complete our whole programme.”
Testing will continue at Barcelona until Sunday.
Unofficial Thursday times from Barcelona:
1. Mark Webber, Red Bull, 1:21.487, 109 Laps
2. Nico Hulkenberg, Williams, 1:22.407, 82 Laps

"Ferrari F10 is my best car yet", says Fernando Alonso
Double world champion Fernando Alonso has hailed the new Ferrari F10 as the best car he has ever driven.
Alonso was 1.5 seconds slower than McLaren in last week's Jerez's test, but he explained that Ferrari were yet to show their true potential.
"This is the best car I've ever had," said the 28-year-old, who won the world title in 2005 and 2006 with Renault.
"Red Bull, McLaren and Renault have been very quick and have shown their cards, while we are still hiding ours."
World champion Jenson Button clocked the fastest time in Jerez, while Alonso was quickest in Valencia.
Red Bull also looked impressive in testing, but Alonso believes Ferrari are the team to beat.
"We will analyse the data, but we are very optimistic," he said.
"If I were in a different team I would be looking at Ferrari because everything is going really well.
"Maybe where Ferrari has to improve is the short runs with little fuel onboard."
The final test takes place at Barcelona next week before the season-opening race in Bahrain on 14 March.
Felipe Massa praises Ferrari reliability
Felipe Massa admits his two days in action at rain-soaked Jerez this
week were hardly ideal preparation for the new season – but the
Brazilian says Ferrari must at least be thankful that its new
F10 continues to prove reliable. Despite further rain showers having hampered teams' planned
programmes in the second week of Jerez testing so far, Massa was still
able to complete a total of 164 laps across Wednesday and Thursday with
only a small mechanical glitch on the second day disturbing his
progress. The Brazilian didn’t attempt to paint a brighter picture of the
week’s testing to date, but did welcome the F10’s consistently strong
reliability and the fact Ferrari is not alone in feeling frustrated
with the weather. "Those were no good two days, like the ones last week,” Massa said
following Thursday’s running ahead of Fernando Alonso’s return to the
car. "Yesterday and today the track was almost always completely wet. “Nevertheless driving many kilometres was useful for the reliability and for fixing some small problems. “And we are all in the same boat, so we shouldn’t complain.” Although Friday’s running got underway in drier conditions and
further sunny weather is forecast for Saturday’s final day, teams will
nevertheless not have had the kind of extensive dry running they would
have ideally wanted ahead of next week’s final pre-season outing at
Barcelona. Massa acknowledges some teams will be feeling the implications of
the recent poor conditions more than Ferrari – given it was one of
seven squads to enjoy perfect conditions at Valencia earlier this month
– but nevertheless is himself keen to see some prolonged good weather
next week. “Obviously those who didn’t have many possibilities to drive on the
dry, might be penalised, because there are only six days of testing
left,” he said. “From this point of view I’m really happy that our team has done
more laps than any other, but obviously I hope that we’ll have sun in
Barcelona!" While the rain has made the testing lap times particularly
meaningless for much for past week, Massa has been impressed with Red
Bull’s RB6 since its testing bow and thinks it will be in the fight at
the front alongside Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes. “I’d say that Red Bull has a good car, but that’s no surprise considering how they concluded last season,” he said.
Lotus officially launches 2010 car in London
Lotus became the latest Formula 1 team to launch its 2010
challenger, as the wraps officially came off the new car in London on
Friday. The new car, named T127, carries the colours used by the legendary
team back in the 1950s and 1960s. The Lotus name is returning to Formula 1 this year having quit the
sport at the end of the 1994 season. The team is now owned by Malaysian
businessman Tony Fernandes. "Words cannot express how I feel today," said Fernandes. "It is an
amazing job to get an F1 licence, have five people in Hingham and turn
up today with this car. "I was thrilled when Clive [Chapman] said that this was just like te beginning of Lotus back in the early days." He added: "We know we have a huge burden on our shoulers, standing
on the shoulders of giants - Clark, Moss, Hill, and Mansell. We know we
have a tremendous journey in front of us, we are honoured and cherished
to be a part of history - we will leave no stone unturned in our
efforts and we will do our best to return Lotus to its glory days." The new car was shaken down at the Silverstone circuit earlier this
week and the team is scheduled to begin testing at the Jerez circuit
alongside rivals from next week. Experienced F1 drivers Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen will be the men in charge of racing the Lotus cars this year. Lotus is the second new team to complete and launch its car ahead of
the start of the 2010 season. Technical chief Mike Gascoyne said Lotus
is aiming to do a professional job this year. "We are looking in really good shape," Gascoyne told AUTOSPORT
earlier this week. "We have to improve the pace of our car and the
results from wind tunnel, but that will come with time. "Our first aim was to be on the grid - to be a professional team
where everything is to be F1 standard. We definitely will do that. The
team will look good and step one has been achieved."
